Adkins was raised by a single mother in various working-class neighborhoods of London. Adkins loved listening to modern pop music when she was young and was learning to play the clarinet as well as the guitar. It wasn't until she was in her teens that she was introduced to Etta James, a blues and rhythm performer, as well as other artists in the late 20th century which was when she began thinking about a future career in music. She was in a secondary school for the visual and performing arts, which was funded by the federal government. One of her friends posted songs Adkins had written on Myspace. After her graduation Adkins' music attracted the attention of record companies. She was signed in 2006 with XL Recordings.
